40-something Gap Year
The Life We are Leaving Behind
So what are Greg and I leaving behind?
We currently live a very comfortable life in Dorridge, a village in-between Birmingham and Warwick. It’s a lovely place to live, lots of old trees, a small village centre, a train line to London and Birmingham and good road links to the rest of the country.
We bought our house around 6 years ago and have renovated it extensively, meaning that it is ideally suited to the way that we live. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get through the build so we are quite emotionally attached to the bricks and mortar. We have the most fabulous neighbours and feel a real sense of community in our area. Our decision to travel isn’t about dissatisfaction, it’s about expansion – switching the material things for experiences. And so, our 40-something gap year idea was born.
Then, there is our careers; I am a Corporate Treasurer and have worked in treasury for nearly 20 years. I really enjoy my job, the daily diversity, the inter-personal interaction and I’ve loved the company that I work for albeit I’ve only been there for just over a year.
Greg is a Sales Director and has worked for the same company, working his way up for nearly 20 years. He has many deep friendships from his time there. For both of us, leaving our roles is scary and a big decision, but we decided to back ourselves – work will be there when we get back and we will have grown as people!
Family & Friends
Now, the really tough part, people……I am originally from Birmingham but left the city at the age of 18. Living in Dorridge means that I am near to friends and my family, who I will really miss. Greg’s family live in Nottingham, so they aren’t far away and we manage to see friends or family most weekends. I’m sure that we will come back in a year and it will seem that we haven’t left but to leave them is tough.
I won’t even mention the leaving Juno, our dog, part ……….
So, off we go on our 40-something gap year adventure knowing that our furniture is in storage, our house is being rented (hopefully!), our CVs and linked-in profiles are up-to-date and our friends / family know we love them.
